Video presentations are one of the best ways to deliver your message. After all we are all probably well versed with the phrase that ‘a picture paints a thousand words’. So a good presentation filled with a powerful mix of images and spoken words is a recipe for success. With that in mind, why do so many people get it wrong?

This blog post will take a look at some of the mistakes to avoid when making a presentation video.

Know your Stuff
The first and most important area is that of knowing the subject that you are going to speak about. Even if your presentation isn’t recorded live it will still be very obvious if you don’t know the topic that you are covering.
There are fewer things that can ruin the credibility of a presenter more than not knowing what you are talking about. It goes without saying that slang and jargon should be avoided, otherwise there is a very real danger of losing your audience.

Keep it Simple
This applies to practically any kind of presentation, be it video or live. Most successful presentations will tend to revolve around only 3 or maybe 4 different areas. Taking this approach will make it much more likely that your audience will retain the information that is being given to them. It also helps to keep them interested in your topic.
There is a presentation principle often referred to as K.I.S.S. it is an acronym of ‘keep it simple, stupid’. The theory behind this has already been explained above. However, another important factor is by telling the audience everything about your product or service; they can then make a purchase decision without any more contact with you. This clearly is not the ideal outcome.

Technology Overkill
In any good presentation there will be an element of technology. This can be a powerful way of reinforcing facts and figures, sometimes with a diagram or by the use of PowerPoint or similar. Unfortunately many presenters will use these slides to feature all of the words that they want to actually say, which begs the question, why do they need the presenter?
To get the best out of this type of material, the presenter should use bullet points which can then be expanded on in further detail. This will demonstrate further that the presenter really is the authority on the subject.

Using some or indeed all of these suggestions will help to ensure your presentation is remembered for all the right reasons.
