The IPad 3 Vs The Others

By Rizwan Ahmad - 24 April 2013 No Comments
The iPad 3 was released by Apple in March 2012. Some of the tablets which competed with the iPad 3 were the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1, the Asus Transformer Pad Infinity TFT700T, the Google Nexus 7, Kindle Fire, Microsoft Surface and if one includes it – the Blackberry Playbook. 7 months after its release, the 4th Generation iPad was announced, and the iPad 3 immediately became a thing of the past.

Curiously, all the other tablet makers still faced ostentatious competition from all the older iPad models. This denotes the key to the tablet, which is unparalleled originality. The iPad, being the original, makes all the others seem like knock offs.

Operating Systems
iOS 5.1, - Apple’s customary OS - officially launched a week before the release of the new iPad and was the OS in the iPad3. While Asus, Galaxy and Kindle ran different versions of Android from Ice Cream Sandwich to Jelly Bean, Microsoft Surface ran Windows RT. Blackberry uses its own BB tablet OS.

Hardware
The iPad 3 had a dual core Apple A5X processor whereas, the Nexus 7 had a quad core Tegra 3 processor probably the same that the Surface will have. Both seemed to have better performance than Kindle’s 1GHz dual core OMAP4.  Asus Transformer had an excellent 1.6 GHZ quad core processor while Galaxy Note has Dual Core 1.4 GHz processor. This means that the iPad3 was not competitive with its rivals here. All tablets except the Kindle Fire come with a 1 GB onboard RAM.

Bulky and Slim
The iPad 3 is the clear winner with amazing features including the Retina display, sharper text and images, 3.1 MP screen resolution, HD video recording features etc. The iPad 3 also has a sleek design which beats its competitors. It has a 9.7 inch screen while the Asus and Samsung ones have a 10.1” screen. Kindle and Nexus 7 both have a 7” screen while the Microsoft Surface seems the biggest with a 10.6” display screen. The iPad 3 has the highest screen resolution at 2048x1536 while the nearest competitor Microsoft Surface has a resolution of only 1920x1080. Nexus is the lightest in weight at around 350g while the Kindle weighs around 450g. The iPad 3 and the rest of the bunch are comparatively hefty at 650g.

Tablets and Cameras
As far as the camera is concerned the Asus Transformer with an 8 MP camera seems to be the best of the bunch. The iPad is in the next range here with a 5MP camera. Kindle Fire being an ebook reader does not have a camera, but future models may include one.  All the devices are available in the 16 GB variants. While some have 32GB and 64 GB variants, the Nexus also has a smaller 8 GB version. Most of them have a Wifi or WiFI+Sim option so internet connection is really easy.

Conclusion
Only the basic features have been compared here and each varies greatly in price and performance.  All however are stylish in design and really easy to use. They are ideal for people of all ages and technological expertise and are the next step in mobile computing.

Phil Turner has an 82 year old mother who loves her iPad, except she could not connect to the Internet. Phil bought her a mifi adapter for her birthday and after setting it up he had to test the internet speed to make sure it was working. It was slower than her Virgin broadband but that was to be expected.
