For some people a smart phone just isn’t going to cut it. Smart phones are great, but they are a little fragile, with their touch screens that are almost like glass. If you’re the kind of person that likes to live a little more on the wild side, an iPhone or Samsung Galaxy probably isn’t going to be what you’re looking for. What you want is a specially designed survival phone. These tough phones are manufactured with people like you in mind, and should be able to withstand a little rough handling. But just because you’re going for a tough phone doesn’t mean that you should have to have a phone that’s lacking in features either.

Why You Should Consider the Motorola Defy…
The Defy has an awful lot going for it. Firstly, it’s fifty per cent thinner than the Sonim, fifty per cent generally smaller and thirty per cent lighter. If you’re dragging this phone up a mountain, you want it to be as portable as possible, which the Defy is. It has faster maximum data speeds, meaning you get faster messages and emails. It also has better Bluetooth support, coming equipped with Bluetooth 2.1 rather than the 2.0 version on the Sonim. If you frequently need to connect over Bluetooth, the newer version means that you get faster data transfer and that your phone uses less battery power when connecting.

The camera on the Defy is superior, being a 5 MP in built device, rather than the 2 MP device on the Sonim. That means that photos taken are of higher quality and have more fine detail. The screen is also better quality, having a massive ten times higher resolution, making is sharper and clearer to read. Plus, the Defy has assisted GPS, rather than the regular GPS on the Sonim, meaning that you can pin point your location faster, which could be important on a phone like this…

What the Sonim Land Rover S1 Has to Offer…
The Sonim only has one advantage over the Motorola. However, in a phone like this, that advantage is a big one. It gets much better battery life. The Sonim averages four times more standby time and two and a half times more talk time per battery charge cycle than the Defy. In a survival phone, battery life can be everything, and the Sonim really wins out on this one.

Which One is Better?
The Motorola Defy is a great phone, and it has a lot of features. However, in a phone like this, only one thing really matters and that’s battery life. Your phone is useless in the wilderness if you have no battery. Which is why our recommendation is going to the Sonim Land Rover S1.

Phil Turner thought he wanted a tough phone until he started looking at specs and prices. All he needs is one that does not break when he drops it on the floor.
