After the US commission accepted Microsoft’s acquisition of Zenimax, and after the long and warm welcome press release to Bethesda, today the leader of the Xbox, Phil Spencer, said a few words about the potential of the idTech graphics engine designed by id Software, a development house founded in 1991 in Shreveport (USA).

In particular, Spencer has opened the possibility that idTech can be implemented in the future in the new first-party games dedicated to Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. The most recent version of the idTech has shown itself in all its glory in the excellent Doom Eternal, the latest installment in the shooter series. id Software is currently part of Bethesda.

In a recent roundtable, Phil Spencer suggested that the idTech graphics engine could be implemented in the development of future Xbox Studios first-party titles, by internal studios such as The Coalition and 343 Industries.

These are the words of Spencer:

When you think about id Software’s capability and them collaborating and talking with The Coalition and 343 Industries, and just the first-person/third-person shooter space that we have, the studios that are there, I think it’s just kind of an amazing capability.

The other thing that we haven’t really talked about is the future of idTech and what could that mean inside of Xbox. Obviously, you know, we’ve got a ton of studios doing a bunch of different work. I love the way Marty Stratton talked about how they’ve collaborated with our Bethesda studios on idTech and I just think about that to the next level. Like, what can we do inside of our organization with idTech, which is one of the world’s best game engines out there, and just make it a tool that so many developers can use to realize their vision?

What do you think about it?
