How to Fix Forza Horizon 5 Stop Working, Crashing, Freezing & Black Screen Issues On PC?

Step 1 – Make Date, Time, Time Zone and Region Correct On your PC

The first thing you can do to fix the issue is check if the Date, Time, Time Zone and Region is correct on your PC. Now, to check the date, time and time zone etc. follow the steps below.

  • Right Click on the date and time at the right bottom of your desktop screen
  • Click adjust Date and Time
  • Make sure you have turned on the option Set Time Automatically and Set Time zone Automatically.
  • In, case of Windows 11, you won’t find the Set Time Automatically and Set Time zone Automatically. You will have set it manually
  • Now, on the same screen, Date and Time setting Window and click on the Add clocks for different time zone option
  • Now, go to Date and Time and here click on change date and time and select the right date and time there.
  • Now, click Sync now button on the Date and Time setting Window, that’s it.
  • Now, go back to Date and Time setting Window and this time click on the Region tab on the left and select the right region from there.

Step 2 – Allow the Forza Horizon 5 exe file to your antivirus program, disable your antivirus temporarily

In the second step you can try to allow the the Forza Horizon 5 exe file to your antivirus program. So, if you have any third party antivirus program installed then make sure you have allowed the game exe file to your antivirus.

If you are using Windows security instead of any third party antivirus then go and allow the Forza Horizon 5 exe file in Windows security by following the steps below.

  • Go to Windows search at the bottom left
  • Type in Virus and Threat Protection and hit enter
  • Now, go to the Ransomware protection
  • Turn On the Controlled folder option if its Off
  • Click on Allow an app through Controlled folder access
  • Now, click Add an Allowed app >> Brows all apps and then go to the Forza Horizon 5 installation folder were you have installed the game
  • In the game folder select the file named Forza Horizon 5.exe and click on open

Step 3 – Restart Your PC

Step 4) Login with the same Microsoft Store and the Xbox App account

Make sure you are logged in with same account on Microsoft Store and the Xbox App. If you are not using the same account for the Microsoft Store and the Xbox App then you might get these issues while launching and playing the game.

Step 5 – Logout from Xbox app and Microsoft Store app and login again

If all the above steps doesn’t work for you then you can also try to logout from both Xbox app and Microsoft Store app and login again and see if this fixes the Forza Horizon 5 crashing, freezing, not launching and black screen issues on your PC.

Step 6 – Unplug Any External USB devices from your PC

If you have any VR/Windows Mixed Reality Headsets and any other external USB devices which you are not using when launching the game then simply go and unplugged them from your PC. After, doing this go and try to launch the game again and you should be able to play Forza Horizon 5 game on your PC.

Step 7 – Run the game as an administrator

In the next steps go and try to run the game as an administrator, to do this follow the steps below.

  • Go to game folder
  • Now, right-click on the Forza Horizon 5 and then properties
  • Under the Compatibility tab, click Run this program as an administrator then click apply and ok
  • Now, go and try to launch the game by double-clicking on the Forza Horizon 5.exe.

Step 8 – Update to the Latest AMD Radeon Graphics Driver 21.11.1

If you are using an AMD Radeon processor, then updating it to the latest Radeon Software Adrenalin Edition driver update (version 21.11.1) might fix all such Forza Horizon 5 crashing, freezing, black screen issues.

There are also some programs running in the background such as antiviruses which are set to receive updates automatically. So, in that case, your system is already busy receiving the update and when you start the game, you may find some lags or crashing issues while playing the game.

So, to get out of this go to the Task Manager and then click on the startup tab and from there now right-click on the program which you want to prevent from opening at the Windows startup and select Disable.

Step 11 – Do a clean installation of the graphics driver

Go to the official driver website for the below brands and download the latest driver for your GPU and then do a clean install of the graphic driver on your PC.

To perform a clean install of the driver, make sure to check the box which says Perform a clean installation on the Custom installation options window when you install the driver.

Step 12 – Update Windows to the latest version

This step has worked for so many players in fixing all Forza Horizon 5 crashing, freezing, game not loading & the application has unexpectedly stopped working error on PC. So, you can also try to update your Windows to the latest version and then re launch the game and see if this fixes the issue.

Follow the steps below to update your Windows 10.

  1. Open the Start menu and select the gear icon to open Settings.
  2. Select Update & Security, then select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Available updates should begin downloading and installing automatically. Be sure to allow updates to install completely before returning to Call of Duty: Vanguard.

Please note: Call of Duty: Vanguard cannot be played on Windows 7 or Windows 8.

Step 13 – Try Windowed mode

Try to play the game in Windowed mode. To get into Windowed mode simply press (alt + enter) on your keyboard.

Step 14 – Verify the game files

If you are playing Forza Horizon 5 on Steam and getting crashing, freezing, game not loading/launching issues. Then Verifying the game files could fix such issues on your PC.

To verify the Forza Horizon 5 game files on Steam:

  • Go Steam
  • Right-click on Forza Horizon 5 game
  • Select properties >> local files tab >> then click on Verify integrity of the game files.

Step 15 – Turn off the steam in-game overlay

Turn off steam in-game overlay, also close other overlay applications, also disable Steam cloud save, do not overclock, close all the overclocking applications.

To turn off steam in-game overlay:

  • Go Steam then go to settings
  • Now, go to In-Game and under the Steam Overlay uncheck the option Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game
  • Now, on the same setting Window cloud and then uncheck the option Enable Steam Cloud synchronization for application which supports it
  • Now, go try to launch the game.

Step 16 – Re-install the game Forza Horizon 5

Uninstall, delete the game folder, reinstall the game to another drive, use an SSD drive (recommended) if available.

Step 17 – Close Discord, Nvidia GeForce Experience Application

If the Discord or Nvidia GeForce Experience application are running on your PC then go and close both the applications and try to launch the game again.

Step 18 – Lower Down Graphics Settings 

You can try to lower down graphics settings by changing the graphics settings from High to Medium, or Low. Under the Graphics Setting tab, you can try to change the following settings that should fix the ongoing crashing, freezing, black screen issues on your PC.

  • Run the game
  • On the Forza Horizon 5 main screen click on the Options on the lower right bottom
  • Go to Video
  • And here lower down the Resolution
  • Turn off the V sync option
  • Turn off the HDR
  • Now save the settings, that’s it

Step 19 – Reset the Microsoft Store

You can use the steps below to reset the Microsoft Store which will clear the cache and refresh your library permissions. This fixes the majority of the issues.

  1. Close the Windows Store app if you have it open.
  2. Click Start and type ‘WSRESET‘, without the quotes.
  3. Right click on the command and click ‘Run as Administrator‘. If the Windows permission box appears, click ‘Yes’ or ‘Run’.
  4. A black MS Dos screen will appear for a few seconds. Wait for it to disappear and the Store will automatically open.
  5. Attempt to Install the Forza title.

Step 20 – Reinstall Microsoft Visual C++ programs

  1. Press the Windows Key + R, appwiz.cpl and then press Enter.
  2. Locate the Microsoft Visual C++ programs in the list.
  3. Select each entry and then click Uninstall.
  4. Download a fresh copy of Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime from here and then install it.

Step 21 – Disabling Development Mode

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type Powershell and hit enter.
  3. Copy and paste the following into the Powershell window and press enter.

Get-AppXPackage | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml”} 

Reboot your PC.

Step 22 – Disable or Uninstall any OBS, Xsplit, or any other streaming programs

Please make sure you either disable or uninstall to ensure successful gameplay.

Step 23 – Deactivate Windows Defender

  1. Open Start
  2. Open Settings
  3. Click. Update & Security
  4. Click Windows Security. This tab is in the upper-left side of the window
  5. Click Virus & threat protection
  6. Click Virus & threat protection settings
  7. Disable Windows Defender’s real-time scanning
  8. Set game priority to high
  9. Turn off any overlays
