Bungie is best known for the Halo and Destiny franchises, but before any of those titles, the company made the Marathon trilogy of ’90s PC shooters. During PlayStation Showcase 2023 the studio surprised everyone by announcing a spiritual successor Marathon to that original franchise in the form of an extraction shooter.

Marathon is a new PvP-focused game that will take place on the planet Tau Ceti IV and see players taking on the role of cybernetic mercenaries called Runners as they explore a lost colony in search of riches, fame, and infamy.

Runners can engage in solo play or in crews of three as they traverse the wilds of the planet in a spartan and brutal setting that is both familiar and alien at once.

Though not a sequel to the original Marathon series, the game will be inspired by those games and the world they inhabit.

According to a post on the official Bungie blog, it will be a modern take on that universe and feature a similar sense of player-based storytelling with some discoveries or actions having a global impact across the community.

With synths, robotic caterpillars, and plenty of sci-fi action, the reveal trailer for the game is a pretty good look at what’s in store. But if you’re still craving more details on the title, you can read the full announcement from the official Bungie blog right here.
