Windows 11

Microsoft has released two new updates for Windows 11 that focus on making the system’s recovery tools more reliable. These are KB5067039 and KB5067019, which update the Windows Recovery Environment – a helpful feature that starts running when your computer runs into any problems, like failing to start up or needing a full reset. The latest updates are designed to work smoothly with recent changes in Windows 11.

The KB5067039 update targets newer versions of Windows 11, including 24H2, 25H2, and the upcoming Windows Server 2025. It improves how the recovery system handles errors when apps crash or fail to open during fixes. Instead of showing a technical command screen that might confuse users, it now displays a simple message box explaining the issue. This makes troubleshooting easier and less scary for everyday people.

KB5067019 covers older Windows 11 versions, 22H2 and 23H2, bringing similar upgrades to the recovery setup. Both updates also touch on security certificates that help your computer boot safely. Microsoft warns that some of these certificates will expire in June 2026, which could cause startup issues on older devices if not fixed in time. They recommend checking and updating these now to avoid problems later.

These recovery updates are not the usual monthly patches that add new features or fix everyday bugs. They are more like behind-the-scenes improvements that ensure your computer can get back on track if something goes wrong.

Other Noteworthy Fixes in This Update

Alongside the recovery improvements, this update bundle delivers a collection of fixes and refinements across Windows 11:

  • Gaming: Enhanced Xbox controller support means a short press opens the Game Bar, a long press opens Task View, and holding the controller powers it off. Game performance has also been improved when using overlays like Game Bar, especially with multiple monitors at different refresh rates.
  • Dynamic Lighting: Fixed an issue where the Dynamic Lighting Background Controller could use up too much processor power after unlocking the computer.
  • Voice Access: Resolved a bug where Voice Access could freeze while claiming to listen.
  • Windows Hello: The notorious “Something happened and your PIN isn’t available” error in Safe Mode should be gone, and PIN setup failures on Microsoft Entra ID–joined devices are fixed. Face recognition setup with USB infrared cameras has also been addressed.
  • Windows Sandbox: Fixed high CPU usage from the VmmemCmFirstBoot process after login when Sandbox is enabled.
  • HDR: HDR settings now stay enabled when you turn them on.
  • Quick Settings: Entering a PIN to cast from Quick Settings works correctly; pressing Enter now confirms the PIN.
  • Input: Chinese characters display properly when using the Input Method Editor (IME), and no longer show as empty boxes in limited text fields.
  • Servicing: Windows Update issues caused by Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) have been resolved.
  • Media: Playback problems for protected content in Blu-ray, DVD, and digital TV apps triggered by previous updates are fixed.
  • Performance: Improved Windows Certificate Authorities, now supporting CRL partitioning.
  • Battery: The taskbar battery icon now accurately shows charging status when plugged in.
  • Settings: Crashes when accessing drive info through Settings or File Explorer properties have been addressed.
  • Windows Update: Fixed error 0x80070002 blocking build installation for some devices.
  • Modern Look: Several system dialogs, like those shown when an app fails to open, have been refreshed with a more modern Windows 11 appearance.
  • Hyper-V: Fixed freezes when assigning a GPU paravirtualization device to a virtual machine.
  • Browser: The print preview screen freezing in Chromium-based browsers should no longer occur.
  • Gaming: Resolved input failures after Gamepad-only sign-in at the lock screen.
  • PowerShell: Fixed timeouts in PowerShell Remoting and missing audit events in WinRM.
  • Compatibility: Removed the ltmdm64.sys driver, which disables support for certain fax modem hardware.
