What Does “TIHI” Stands for?

Have you ever witnessed something so unsettling that you couldn’t find the words to explain it? It’s possible that “TIHI” is the exact phrase you’re looking for. This is what it entails.

What Does “Thanks, I Hate It” or TIHI Stands For?

“Thanks, I Hate It” or TIHI is the acronym for “Thanks, I Hate It.” It’s an acronym for a specific internet slang word, especially on Reddit and other internet message boards. It’s used in response to an unnatural or unsightly photo, message, or tale that makes the viewer uncomfortable.

TIHI photographs are frequently heavily edited to include weird, unpleasant features that will elicit a reaction. They can also be tweets or internet comments.

TIHI can be used in the headline of a post and in the comments that follow it. When used as a post title, it also disclaimers that the image may make you feel uneasy. In some contexts, TIHI is interchangeable with the internet slang term “cursed,” which refers to images or pieces of text that you might prefer not to view at all.

The Origins of TIHI

TIHI and its slogan are newer than some of the other internet acronyms we’ve discussed. Unlike other slang expressions, it emerged from the expanding meme culture of the previous few years rather than from internet chatrooms.

While there is no definitive source for when the phrase “Thanks, I Hate It” originated, it has been irregularly used on the internet for the previous decade to indicate that something makes you uncomfortable. When it was added to the internet slang repository Urban Dictionary in 2017 and 2018, it became a more prominent term.

When the Reddit community r/TIHI was formed in late 2018, it was abbreviated. The following year, the acronym version’s Urban Dictionary entry appeared online, claiming it to be the website’s “7th most cursed subreddit.” Other acronyms that have gained popularity due to their subreddits, such as ELI5 and TIL, are examples.

It’s grown reasonably popular outside of the subreddit since then. In addition, TIHI is a popular abbreviation on social networking platforms such as Twitter and TikTok and casual discussions.

TIHI on Reddit

As previously said, the subreddit, which has over a million followers, is the best site to find TIHI-related content. It has grown to become the largest community for sharing TIHI-related photographs, with some of the most popular postings receiving tens of thousands of likes and comments.

The subreddit’s postings all have an identical format. The phrase “Thanks, I Hate” must be first in the title, followed by the item depicted in the photo or story below. If the image shows a cheeseburger, for example, the headline should be “Thanks, I Hate Cheeseburgers.”

Even if you’re unfamiliar with the notion of TIHI, the image above appears weird and out of place right away. All of the TIHI posts aim to elicit that sense.

Sarcastic Connotation

It’s worth noting that the statement “Thanks, I Hate It” is intended to be sarcastic. While one may respond “Thank you,” they are also expressing their dissatisfaction with what they have just seen or heard. When the phrase is spelled out or spoken out, this is highly noticeable.

Outside of the context of “cursed” photographs or posts, there are certain instances where TIHI is employed. The phrase might be used as an intelligent come back to anything you’re dissatisfied about in intimate talks. If someone tells you that your destination has no cell phone coverage, you might respond with, “Thanks, I hate it.”

How to Use “Thanks, I Hate It” or TIHI?

While TIHI is commonly used to describe an unsettling picture, it can also be used when speaking with friends or relatives. Here are some examples of the phrase as well as the acronym in action:

  • On Reddit: “Thanks, I Hate Wicker Baskets.”
  • As a Comment: “That new horror movie? TIHI.”
  • Spoken Aloud: “Another snowstorm. Thanks, I hate it.”
  • As a Message: “I did not want to see that picture. TIHI.”
