The first Gran Turismo movie trailer has been released by Sony Pictures Entertainment and it looks like it’s going to be a high-octane affair! Directed by District 9 and Elysium helmer Neill Blomkamp, Gran Turismo is based on the inspiring true story of a teenage gamer who uses his gaming skills to become a real race car driver.
The film stars Archie Madekwe (Midsommar), Stranger Things star David Harbour, Orlando Bloom, Darren Barnett and Djimon Hounsou. They’re joined by Geri Halliwell-Horner, a former Spice Girl who’s married to Red Bull Formula One Team Principal Christian Horner, and German actor Thomas Kretschmann.
Neill Blomkamp is responsible for the film’s direction, screenplay, and score. He penned the script with Jason Hall and Zach Baylin.
A logline for the film describes it as “the ultimate wish fulfillment tale” of a teenager who used his Gran Turismo gaming skills to win a series of Nissan competitions to become an actual professional race car driver.
The movie follows Jann Mardenborough (Madekwe), a talented gamer who aspires to become a professional race driver, training with his trainer Jack Salter (Harbour). He also faces a number of challenges as he attempts to win the GT Academy competition that sees the best Gran Turismo players across the world coming together in a pedal-to-the-metal racing tournament.
Adapted from the video game franchise, the film is produced by PlayStation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan. Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi is also involved with the project as an executive producer.
