Tesla officially entered the Indian market on July 15, 2025, with the opening of its first showroom at Maker Maxity Mall in Mumbai’s upscale Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). The 4,000-square-foot Tesla Experience Centre, inaugurated by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, marks a major milestone for the electric vehicle (EV) giant in the world’s third-largest automotive market.
The showroom prominently displays the India-spec Tesla Model Y, with bookings now open and deliveries set to begin after September 2025.
Tesla Model Y Price Details in India
The Model Y, Tesla’s entry-level electric SUV, is offered in two variants in India:
- Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD): Priced at ₹59.89 lakh (ex-showroom) or ₹61.07 lakh (on-road), with a 500 km range (WLTP), 0-100 km/h in 5.9 seconds, and a top speed of 201 km/h.
- Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive: Priced at ₹67.89 lakh (ex-showroom) or ₹69.14 lakh (on-road), with a 622 km range (WLTP), 0-100 km/h in 5.6 seconds, and a top speed of 201 km/h.
Both variants feature a minimalist interior with a 15.4-inch touchscreen controlling most functions, 19-inch aero-styled wheels, a panoramic glass sunroof, wireless charging, USB-C ports, and app-based vehicle access.
An optional Full Self-Driving suite is available for an additional ₹6 lakh, though some features may require regulatory approval.
The India-spec Model Y, imported from Tesla’s Shanghai factory, faces a 70% import duty, leading to higher prices compared to the US ($44,990), China (₹2.63 lakh), or Germany (€45,970).
Showroom and Features
Designed by architect Neeta Sharada, the Mumbai showroom features a sleek, minimalist look with a white backdrop, Tesla branding, and Indian design elements, completed in just 45 days.
It serves as an experience centre where customers can explore the Model Y, book test drives, and customize orders. Six Model Y units, including a striking Ultra Red variant, have been imported for display and testing. The Model 3 is also showcased but will likely go on sale later in 2025.
Charging and Expansion Plans
Tesla plans to install 16 V4 Superchargers across Mumbai (Thane, BKC, Lower Parel, Navi Mumbai) and 16 in Delhi-NCR (Aerocity, Saket, Golf Course Road, Noida), capable of adding 267 km of range in 15 minutes.
A service centre in Kurla West, Mumbai, will handle maintenance, complementing Tesla’s existing office in Bengaluru and engineering hub in Pune. A second showroom is planned for Delhi by late July 2025, with potential expansion to Bengaluru and Hyderabad based on market response.
Why It Matters
The launch, attended by CM Fadnavis and Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik, was hailed as a “statement of innovation and sustainability,” with Mumbai highlighted as India’s entrepreneurial hub.
Tesla’s entry, coinciding with the launch of Starlink Wireless Services in India, follows years of speculation and negotiations, driven by CEO Elon Musk’s push for lower import duties.
While Tesla currently imports vehicles as completely built units (CBUs), talks with the Indian government hint at future local manufacturing to reduce costs.
The high pricing targets India’s premium EV segment, competing with BMW and Mercedes, but the 4-5% EV market share and limited charging infrastructure pose challenges.
Availability
Bookings for the Model Y are open in Mumbai, Delhi, and Gurugram via Tesla’s website or the BKC showroom, with deliveries starting in Q3 2025 for the RWD variant and Q4 2025 for the Long Range. However, some fans note the steep pricing due to import duties. Visit Tesla’s website or the Mumbai showroom to book or explore the Model Y.
