Coinbase tried to reflect this mood in a dark, sarcastic UK advertisement that showed a country struggling while pretending everything was fine. However, UK regulators decided that the message went too far.

The UK’s advertising watchdog, the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA), has now banned the Coinbase advert from TV, YouTube, and streaming platforms.

The regulator said the ad was irresponsible and could mislead people about cryptocurrency. The decision came after 35 complaints from viewers and adds to the growing tension between crypto companies and UK advertising rules.

Why the Ad Was Banned

The ASA was mainly concerned about how the advert linked crypto to everyday financial problems. The video showed scenes of rising prices, job losses, housing pressure, and falling living standards. Throughout the film, people calmly repeated the words “everything is fine,” even though things clearly were not.

At the end, the only message on screen said, “If everything’s fine, don’t change anything.”

According to the regulator, this could suggest that crypto is an easy or obvious answer to financial struggles. The ASA said using humour and serious real-life problems together risked making high-risk financial products seem simpler and safer than they really are.

The advert did not mention Bitcoin or cryptocurrency directly. It also did not include any warnings about risk. In the UK, this is important. Crypto ads are expected to clearly explain that digital assets are risky and that people can lose money, especially when ads are shown to a wide public audience.

Coinbase Responds

Coinbase strongly disagreed with the decision. The company said the advert was meant to be social commentary, not financial advice. It argued that the video did not promise profits or suggest crypto as a guaranteed solution.

Coinbase also said the characters in the ad were not meant to represent people in serious financial trouble. According to the company, the regulator misunderstood the message and treated crypto advertising too harshly.

The exchange pointed out that UK users already face strict protections, including knowledge tests and a 24-hour waiting period before trading. Coinbase believes the public is more familiar with crypto than regulators assume and that crypto should not be treated like gambling.

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong described the ban as censorship. He said the ad was banned because it reflected economic problems many people already feel, and that made some authorities uncomfortable.
