Garmin has released a significant new update for its latest smartwatches, bringing a long list of improvements and bug fixes to the Vivoactive 6 (curr. $319.99 on Amazon)  and Venu 4 (curr. $549 on Amazon).

The update marks the start of a new development cycle, following the completion of the previous v16.xx phase last month. The new Beta Version 17.16 is now rolling out through Garmin’s Beta Program, giving users early access to upcoming features and fixes.

New Development Cycle Begins

With Software Version 16.37 closing out the previous update phase, Garmin has now shifted focus to its next round of improvements. While updates for these devices are typically released alongside firmware for the Venu X1, that hasn’t happened yet — though it is expected to follow soon.

For now, Beta 17.16 offers a clear look at what users can expect across the lineup once the update rolls out more widely.

Dozens of Fixes and Enhancements

The update includes a substantial changelog with over 20 improvements across both devices. A large portion of these focus on bug fixes, addressing issues related to performance, syncing, and general usability.

Common fixes include resolving device resets in certain scenarios, improving activity-tracking accuracy, fixing Garmin Connect sync issues, and addressing Wi-Fi setup and keyboard input issues. Garmin has also improved stability for users with large numbers of saved activity files, reducing slowdowns and unresponsiveness.

These updates aim to deliver a smoother and more reliable overall experience.

Vivoactive 6 Gets New Notification Control

For Vivoactive 6 users, one of the key additions is the ability to toggle vibration on or off for smart notifications. This small but useful feature gives users more control over how alerts are delivered, especially in situations where silent operation is preferred.

Venu 4 Gains New Smart Features

The Venu 4 receives several exclusive upgrades in this update. These include a new quick-access silent mode, which can be enabled via shortcuts, and the ability to open the battery manager using voice commands.

Garmin has also addressed battery drain issues that could occur after using phone-related features, along with fixes for touchscreen responsiveness after ECG readings and improved call handling between the watch and connected phone.

Additional refinements improve syncing for Garmin Coach workouts and prevent certain apps from being accessed during active calls.

Fitness and System Improvements

Beyond device-specific changes, the update enhances various fitness and system features. Issues affecting workouts, such as pool swim tracking and strength training timers, have been resolved. Body Battery tracking has also been improved, ensuring more accurate data across activities.

Garmin has also refined UI elements, including better keyboard access, improved animations, and updated translations. Premium features for Garmin Golf subscribers have been expanded, adding enhanced CourseView maps and green contour data.

How to Install the Update

The Beta 17.16 update is currently rolling out via Garmin Connect Mobile. Users enrolled in the Beta Program can manually install it by navigating to Settings, System, and Software Update, then selecting “Check for Updates” on their device.

Conclusion

With this latest update, Garmin is delivering a wide range of improvements aimed at enhancing performance, stability, and user experience across the Vivoactive 6 and Venu 4.

While many changes focus on fixing existing issues, the addition of new features and refinements signals a strong start to the next development cycle for Garmin’s smartwatch lineup.
