How To Blog For Your Company
Businesses often struggle to maintain an interesting and engaging blog. For some businesses it comes a little easier, especially when they offer a product that is well-known. well-reviewed and is easy to talk about. For others, their product or service is about as boring and dull as watching grass grow in your front yard.

Take Nike, for example. They are constantly launching and redesigning shoes and apparel from month to month. They have professional athletes that are draped in their logo from head to toe in literally every professional sport in the world. For Nike, there is always something to talk about. They don’t lack a good story, a good photo op, or a Facebook post for more than 5 minutes.

My company, on the other hand, is a pest control service provider. We enter houses and properties and apply chemicals. Nobody wants bugs and insects in their house. In fact, they even pay us money so they don’t see anything crawling around their floors. We don’t have the endorsements of professional athletes or celebrities. We don’t sell any products to the public. We don’t have a store that people can visit in the local shopping center. So, what do we talk about? How many scorpions we killed this past week? Not quite.

Here are a few ideas to keep your company blog fun and interesting.

1. Events and Holidays. There is a national holiday or major event happening every single week. Holidays and some events are set in stone: Halloween, Christmas, Thanksgiving, 4th of July, tax day, the Super Bowl, March Madness, etc. You can see them happening months down the road. Create a fun blog post surrounding these events. One year for the Super Bowl, we created a post that squared off the most dangerous pests in a playoff bracket. We considered hunting styles, venom toxicity, stingers vs. biting, etc, until we narrowed down a Pest Super Bowl Champion.
Other happenings around the country come and go.

As the “fiscal cliff” was approaching, we published a post regarding the financial cost of pest control. If you’re a local dentist, you can turn that topic into the financial implications of avoiding dental service, short and long term costs. Relate it to keywords often heard surround the national budget, and don’t forget to take a light shot at our elected officials in the process.

2. Cartoons and Infographs. People typically enjoy seeing a story, rather than reading it. If you’re about out of ideas to talk about teeth, create an infograph that illustrates the evolution of dental care, everything from medievil methods to modern day lazer treatments. Stories and statistics are always more fun as a drawing than a paragraph.

3. Invite a Guest Blogger. This helps keep stories fresh. If you are a dentist, invite a local dietician to write about the effects certain food categories have on our teeth. If you’re a tire shop, invite a local auto-body painter to give you a story on the effects the natural elements have on car paint. Car people love to read about anything that has to do with cars, not just tires, so give them something that will still be interesting.
