There are so many gadgets to own nowadays. It used to be that a desktop computer and flip-phone were the coolest toys around. Now there are laptops, smartphones, e-readers, MP3 players, tablets, and more, and some people own all of them. When it comes to MP3 players and smartphones, Apple has been an innovator and industry leader, giving us the iPods and the iPhones that our culture so adores. When you think about it, iPods and iPhones can perform many of the same functions, and they’re both expensive. If it comes down to it, do you really need both? Or is one enough?

Music
Originally, playing music was the primary function of the iPod. You got one so you could take your music with you anywhere in a small, compact package. Now, iPods can do so much more, like play apps and take photos. Also, iPhones can also store your music or allow you to access it from cloud storage. When it comes to music, it seems as though both aren’t necessary, because they’re essentially equally good in this category.

Pictures
Your iPhone can take photos, and it takes really good ones, too. Your iPod can take them, too. Both can take and store your photos, so in this category, too, they’re equally, and so one or the other would be enough for your picture-taking needs.

Storage
When it comes to storing your music and photos, iPods and iPhones each come with a variety of storage choices. For example, you can choose 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, and so on. The higher you go, the more you can store. If you have a lot of photos and music, you might need two devices to hold it all. If you have more than the max storage allowance, though, you have an abnormally high amount of stuff. Storage, however, can be done through the cloud. With cloud storage, you can access your files anywhere that you have an Internet connection, which would make only one of the devices necessary, provided you have access to the Internet.

Apps
Both an iPod and an iPhone allow you to run cool apps from the iTunes App Store. Most apps can be played on both devices, but some are only available for one or the other, depending on the individual developers. Because most apps can be played on both, you really only need one. You may want to check, however, to make sure your favorite apps can be played on both before you make your decision. Apps that involve phone calls and text messages are iPhone-only.

Calls and Texts
Here is where the big difference lies. Your iPhone can call people, receive calls, send text messages, and receive text messages. You iPod can’t. The iPhone is the clear winner here, which points to the notion that you don’t need both an iPod and an iPhone – you only need an iPhone. If you had the choice between the two, you’d probably want to be able to call and text.
