Square Enix has confirmed that Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake, set to release on October 30, 2025, will not offer an upgrade path from the Nintendo Switch version to the Nintendo Switch 2 version.
According to the official FAQ on the Dragon Quest website, the Switch and Switch 2 versions are treated as separate games, meaning save data cannot be transferred or shared between them.
The Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake combines the first two games of the classic RPG series into a single package, featuring updated HD-2D visuals, modernized gameplay, and new voice acting. It will be available on Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and the Microsoft Store, priced at $59.99.
The lack of an upgrade path means players who buy the Switch version and later get a Switch 2 will need to purchase the game again to play the enhanced version, and their progress won’t carry over.
The FAQ advises players to “buy your copy for whichever system you would like to play it on,” as the Switch 2 version offers improved performance, such as faster load times and better frame rates, but no free upgrade or cross-save support exists.
Pre-orders are open now at retailers like Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart, and GameStop for all platforms. If you’re considering the Switch or Switch 2 version, choose carefully based on your console plans, as there’s no way to upgrade or transfer saves.
