How To Prevent Wireless Security Camera Hacking

The purpose of security cameras is to keep our loved ones, our property, and us safe. Security cameras however, can also become a gateway to hacking, reversing their role as safety devices and rendering them into a source of danger. Fortunately, hacking does not happen by chance or luck, but rather is a consequence of our ignorance and lack of information on how to secure a security camera from hacking.

Here, we will discuss ways you can protect your wireless security cameras from being hacked and used against you.

1. Change your Passwords
Just like with most digital devices we have in our possession, changing passwords and utilising complex passwords is key for security. Make sure that you change all passwords on your cameras and routers.

Most IP cameras have a pre-installed software that enables viewing remotely. Such cameras also come with a username and a password, which you can often find in the back of your system. The username and password, however are generic, meaning that they are the same for all cameras sold.

If you fail to change the default password, you place yourself in a greater risk of being hacked. Even when your footage is being sent to a secure server, without a modified password, you are easily placing the key to the storage with all your footage in the hands of the hackers.

2.  Monitor your Internet Network or Wi-Fi
Again, make sure that you have set a strong, complex password. Also, use caution when handing out your password to individuals, guests, and friends. If you find yourself handing out the password frequently, make sure to change your password regularly to prevent any threats.

3. Update your Firmware  
Just like your phone, your IP camera will undergo firmware updates for small fixes and improvements. However, it is possible that your manufacturer may find a hacking threat and strongly advise a firmware update. For this very reason, we recommend that you register your camera with the IP camera manufacturer if the option is available. This will relieve some stress and manual check ups with the manufacturer’s website for updates. Make sure to update to the latest firmware version.

4. Keep an Eye on your Network
If you have firewalled, then you can easily monitor and track IP and Mac addresses, meaning you can see who has and is accessing your network. If you don’t have a firewall, we highly recommend one to keep your security cameras safe.

5. Go Local
If you do not need to access your footage remotely, then the best option is to keep you camera footage on a local network. Since the biggest threat comes from using a wireless or Internet network, if they are not essential, consider eliminating them from the equation.
