Knowing the company protocol and sticking to it is important. Cutting their card in half and having them taken away by security probably isn’t the best way to go about it. Make sure you’re aware of how much notice they are required to work. Don’t expect them to be flexible, as they may have another job and start date lined up.
Don’t Get Emotional
Of course, you may feel deserted, alone, and shocked, but that doesn’t mean you can get emotional. Not in front of them, anyway. You need to be professional. Engage in warm, friendly conversation regarding their plans. Take deep breaths. It’s still important to maintain your relationships. Who knows? They might come back one day – if you want them back. Doing things the right way is essential in order to avoid bad blood.
In some instances, you may be able to work out a solution with the employee for their reason for leaving. They may not want to leave; maybe their spouse has a new job and they are moving.
