Lumen Unreal Engine 5 Tech Demo Running in Real-time on PlayStation 5 Looks Stunningly Great

Today Epic Games announced Unreal Engine 5, its next version of the popular game engine. The dev announced Unreal Engine 5 showcasing the first “Lumen in the Land of Nanite,” real-time demo running live on PlayStation 5 which you can watch below.

Along with the announcement, Epic Games’ Technical Director of Graphics Brian Karis and Special Projects Art Director Jerome Platteaux gave everyone an in-depth look at “Lumen in the Land of Nanite”. They showcased a real-time demonstration tech demo running live on PlayStation 5, meaning the PlayStation 5 is processing the demo as it happens.

Notably, Lumen in the Land of Nanite consists of two new tools used in the Unreal Engine 5 called Nanite, a virtualized micropolygon geometry, which lets artists import film-quality source art comprising hundreds of millions or billions of polygons directly into Unreal Engine, and Lumen, a fully dynamic global illumination solution that immediately reacts to scene and light changes. With Lumen, Artists and designers can create more dynamic scenes.

Epic Games also revealed that Unreal Engine 4.25 already supports next-generation console platforms from Sony and Microsoft, and it’s working closely with console manufacturers, game developers, and publishers using Unreal Engine 4 to build next-gen games.

Epic Games announced that Unreal Engine 5 will be available in preview in early 2021 with a full release date late in 2021. It will also support next-generation consoles including current-generation consoles, PC, Mac, iOS, and Android.

The Dev also revealed that it will launch Fortnite, built with UE4, on next-gen consoles at launch and will finally migrate Fortnite to UE5 in mid-2021.
