Returnal was one of several PlayStation 5 exclusives that were revealed at Sony’s June event. The game appears to be a third-person shooter with a sci-fi setting with roguelike elements.
The official trailer for the game shows a female protagonist who crashes on an alien planet and dies in a mysterious attack. After this event, however, the woman awakens to discover that she is trapped in a time loop and that she is therefore forced to relive the horrible experience over and over again until she is able to break the cycle. The title, currently under development by the Housemarque team, could have a release window according to a recent leak.
In the first (and so far only) trailer shown, no mention was made about the release date, but many fans have speculated that the title could probably hit shelves in 2021, as almost all the titles presented should be released within a year, as shown by a user on Twitter:
But now there seems to be evidence to support this. In fact, through the LinkedIn profile of a former PlayStation employee, or Laura Gilbert, there we can see Returnal, which presents the year 2021 in brackets next to the title. The other games listed on Gilbert’s resume are similarly accompanied by the year they were released, all of which are correct.
In the past few weeks, new details have emerged about Returnal. The new information comes directly from the description of the official trailer of the game, where it is also revealed that the game will use the 3D Audio function of the PlayStation 5.
Below is the description of Returnal:
“Returnal combines action with roguelike gameplay into a third-person shooter where players fight to survive a hostile planet that changes with every death. Players can switch instinctively between firing modes by using a single adaptive trigger and can get right back into the action after dying. PS5’s immersive 3D audio brings the alien world to life around the player, helping players navigate the intense positional combat.”
