Rocket League Free-To-Play Won’t Require PS Plus or Switch Online Membership

Psyonix answered the question whether a PS Plus membership is also required for the Free-To-Play version of “Rocket League”. The answer came without surprise.

The Rocket League published in 2015 offers an energetic mix of arcade soccer and chaotic driving fun, in which you can take part with your friends and acquaintances. However, in order to be able to use online multiplayer, as with most other PS4 games, a paid PS Plus membership is required.

The previous PS Plus obligation raised the question of whether it will remain after the switch from Rocket League to the Free-To-Play model. The developer Psyonix provided the answers on the in-house blog. To put it briefly: The PS Plus obligation does not apply.

The wording says: “PlayStation Plus on PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch Online will no longer be required for online play on those platforms.” This step is not a big surprise, as it is the usual procedure for Free-To-Play games is.

With the switch to Free-To-Play, further changes will be made to the game. The Rocket ID will be merged with the Epic Games account, new Quick Chats will be introduced and Rookie will be given a new bot difficulty. In addition, the menus will be overhauled to make navigation easier. There are also improvements to functions such as tournaments and challenges.

But when can we expect the switch to the Free-To-Play version of Rocket League? The developers want to release an update in mid-September. And the start of Free-To-Play will take place shortly afterwards. “We can’t share the exact date quite yet, but stay tuned for more info,” said the makers.

According to Psyonix, Rocket League including cross-play support will be published in the Epic Games Store. With the switch to Free-To-Play, the Steam version is to be removed from the shop. The title can then no longer be loaded by new players.
