Assassin’s Creed Valhalla: Ubisoft Apologizes for Ableist Language in the Game

Not even Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, released yesterday (November 10) on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PC and Google Stadia, and has managed to save itself from an accusation of offensive content in the game.

On Twitter the user Courtney Craven reported the description of a character that he considered “unacceptable.” Regarding a protagonist of the game that we don’t want to reveal to you to avoid any kind of spoiler, the description reads: “Horribly burned in a childhood accident, Eorforwine is terrified someone will see her disfigured face. She relieves her fury with bursts of violence.”

In reporting the description that was deemed offensive, Craven commented as follows:

“I didn’t include this in my #AssassinsCreedValhalla impressions piece but it’s equally important to address. This is a character description in the game. It’s absolutely unacceptable to talk about facial differences this way. Writers for games and otherwise need to do better.”

Ubisoft responded using the official Twitter profile dedicated to the Assassin’s Creed series, admitting the mistake and apologizing:

“Thank you so much for pointing this out – we apologize for unintentionally reinforcing ableism through this language. We will remove this language in an upcoming update.”

You can watch the exchange yourself in the original language, reported in the Tweet at the bottom of the news. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is the latest chapter in the Ubisoft series and the first to land on next-gen Sony PlayStation 5 and Microsoft Xbox Series X/S consoles.
