In a move that underscores their commitment to inclusivity and accessibility, Sony has unveiled the Logitech G Adaptive Gaming Kit for the PlayStation 5 Access controller. This innovative kit aims to empower gamers with disabilities, offering a highly customizable and adaptable gaming experience.

The journey towards this groundbreaking development began at CES 2023 when Sony introduced “Project Leonardo,” a codename for a controller kit designed explicitly for the PlayStation 5.

Sony has worked closely with accessibility groups, gamers, and game developers to create a controller that caters to a wide range of players’ needs.

The Access controller, at the heart of this initiative, boasts an array of buttons and the flexibility to switch between different input methods. To enhance compatibility, the kit incorporates four 3.5mm AUX ports for connecting third-party accessories.

Hideaki Nishino, Senior Vice President, Platform Experience at SIE, shared insights in a PlayStation blog post: “Our goal was to create an innovative design that’s adaptable to the needs of a wide array of players.”

The development process spanned five years, encompassing six design concepts and prototypes. Collaborations with accessibility experts and community playtesters with disabilities ensured that the design evolved to meet their specific requirements.

The focus on accessibility doesn’t end with the controller itself; it extends to the very moment players unbox the product. The Access controller’s packaging is designed to be opened with one hand, featuring convenient loops on both sides for easy access.

The interior includes slots to organize the various kit components, including 19 interchangeable button caps and 3 stick caps, in a single layer for simple identification and access.

In addition to the “out of the box” solution provided by the Access controller, Sony is also introducing the Logitech G Adaptive Gaming Kit for Access controller. Developed in collaboration with Logitech and the accessibility community, this official accessory kit offers a comprehensive set of supplementary high-performance, durable buttons and triggers.

These components can be easily swapped, assigned, and labeled according to the player’s preferences.

The Logitech G Adaptive Gaming Kit includes:

  • 8 plug-and-play buttons and triggers, featuring gaming-grade mechanical switches, light-touch buttons, and variable trigger controls.
  • Firm gaming mats with a hook and loop system for customizable button and trigger layouts.
  • Velcro ties for versatile mounting options, such as attaching buttons and triggers to objects like armrests.
  • Custom stick-on labels of PS5 symbols for seamless gameplay.

This kit, available starting January 2024 through Logitech’s website and select retail stores, offers even more customization options for players. It aligns with Sony’s commitment to providing inclusivity and accessibility within the gaming community.

Furthermore, the Access controller includes four industry-standard 3.5mm expansion ports, allowing players to connect various third-party buttons, specialty trigger switches, and compatible accessories. Sony’s efforts to offer comprehensive customization options underscore their dedication to making gaming more accessible and enjoyable for everyone.
