Seagate has introduced the Mozaic 3+ Platform, a significant advancement in hard disk drive (HDD) technology, designed to enable HDDs with capacities exceeding 30TB. This platform employs Heat-Assisted Magnetic Recording (HAMR), a crucial element in achieving these high storage capacities. The Mozaic 3+ Platform is expected to play a vital role in the development of future HDDs with even higher capacities, potentially reaching over 5TB per platter in the coming years.

Key features of the Mozaic 3+ Platform include a superlattice platinum-alloy media with a nanoscale lattice structure, which enhances the stability of data storage at higher densities. It also incorporates a plasmonic writer that utilizes a nanophotonic laser, crucial for the precise and reliable writing of data onto the denser media. This is complemented by the 7th generation spintronic reader, which is known to be the industry’s most sensitive magnetic field sensor, ensuring accurate data reading despite the increased density.

Another significant component of the Mozaic 3+ Platform is its 12nm integrated controller, which improves performance by up to three times compared to previous solutions. This integrated system-on-a-chip efficiently manages the advanced HAMR technology and other components, ensuring optimal performance of the HDD.

Seagate plans to ship HDDs over 30TB capacity as part of their Exos series for data centers, beginning from the first quarter of 2024. These HDDs will leverage the advanced features of the Mozaic 3+ Platform to offer unprecedented storage capacities, addressing the growing demand for high-capacity data storage solutions in data centers and other applications where large amounts of data are stored and managed.

The introduction of the Mozaic 3+ Platform and the subsequent release of 30TB+ HDDs mark a significant milestone in the storage industry, promising to meet the increasing data storage needs of modern technology infrastructure.
