With the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D launch just around the corner, anticipation is building for AMD’s latest CPU with 3D V-Cache technology. While AMD has not made an official announcement on the price, recent information suggests that the 9800X3D may be priced slightly higher than the existing Ryzen 7 7800X3D, which launched at $449.

According to insider sources, the 9800X3D is expected to debut at around $30 above the 7800X3D’s initial price, though the final price could change before launch day.

Industry analyst Hoang Anh Phu, who has previously shared accurate insights about AMD’s product plans, suggests that this pricing premium may be part of a broader strategy. Given the limited supply of the 7800X3D, AMD might be betting that gamers and enthusiasts will accept a higher price for the 9800X3D, especially if it promises improved performance.

Price Speculation and Supply Concerns

The 8-core Ryzen 7 7800X3D, which introduced AMD’s innovative 3D V-Cache technology to the mainstream, saw an initial launch price of $449. However, with growing demand and limited stock at many retailers, its price has edged up to around $476 in recent weeks.

This supply strain, attributed to AMD’s distribution strategy, has made it difficult for consumers to find the 7800X3D at its original price.

The higher demand and constrained supply could play a significant role in AMD’s pricing strategy for the 9800X3D, as the company seems poised to introduce the new model at a premium.

Confirmed Technical Enhancements in the 9800X3D

Aside from pricing speculation, AMD has shared some intriguing technical details about the 9800X3D with the media. While the official presentation did not cover pricing specifics, it did confirm enhancements in the architecture of AMD’s 2nd Gen 3D V-Cache.

The 9800X3D features a unique “reverse layered” design, where the 3D V-Cache is stacked beneath the Core Complex Die (CCD). This layout is a shift from traditional configurations and offers potential thermal and performance benefits. AMD is leveraging a “Direct copper-to-copper bond” between layers, which optimizes conductivity and reduces latency.

Additionally, the CPU employs “Through Silicon Vias” (TSVs), which are vertical connections through the silicon layers, to improve inter-layer communication and efficiency.

The cache design also stands out, with the 9800X3D featuring a 64MB L3 Cache placed underneath the CCD. This positioning could improve data access speeds and performance, which would be particularly advantageous for gaming workloads that benefit from increased cache memory.

Pricing Speculation: A Word of Caution

It’s worth noting that while the information on the 9800X3D’s architecture and design is confirmed, the rumored pricing is still speculative.

With just a week to go before the anticipated launch, AMD could adjust the price based on market conditions, competitor pricing, or internal strategy. For now, AMD enthusiasts are advised to take this information with a grain of caution, as the official price point could vary.
