Xbox Series X: It Seems that Microsoft Is Breaking A Big Promise With Cross-Generation Approach

In the past few weeks, Microsoft has indicated that the company will initially pursue a cross-generation strategy and will support Xbox Series X and Xbox One alike. As part of yesterday’s Xbox Games Showcase, however, it could have emerged that the Redmond company is refraining from this project.

While Sony Interactive Entertainment made it unmistakably clear that the company has been playing games exclusively for the new generation PlayStation in the PS5, Microsoft has repeatedly spoken of a cross-generation approach in recent weeks.

This should ensure that the Xbox Game Studios productions will be released not only for the Xbox Series X but also for the Xbox One by at least the end of 2021. As part of yesterday’s Xbox Game Showcase, however, several titles such as State of Decay 3, Everwild, new Forza Motorsport or Fable 4 was presented, and according to the respective trailers, these titles are only available for the Xbox Series X and Windows 10 is under development.

Consequently, the Redmond company has had to accept the accusation in recent hours that the promise of the cross-generation approach has been broken. As a spokesman for Microsoft made it clear, the in-house development studios themselves decided which games are suitable for which platforms and communities. Natively, however, the games will initially be developed for the Xbox Series X.

“Our future Xbox Game Studios titles are being developed natively for Xbox Series X. We will continue to invest in tools for devs to scale across consoles. Which consoles each Studio/game can support will be based on what’s best for their game and their community at launch,” it says.

Aaron Greenberg, head of Xbox Marketing, added: “Future 1P titles are developed for Xbox Series X first. Not saying those games won’t ship on Xbox One, only that we are leading with Series X & each studio will decide what’s best for their game/community when they launch.”

It would, therefore, be conceivable that appropriately adapted versions for the Xbox One will be launched or announced at a later date. Xbox Series X will appear just like the PlayStation 5 in this year’s Christmas season.
