PlayStation 5 Beta Introduces Discord Voice Chat, Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) Support for 1440p and More

Sony today released a new PS5 system software beta that introduces the much-anticipated Discord voice chat feature and variable refresh rate (VRR) support for 1440p. This update is currently available to a limited number of PS5 owners in the US, Canada, Japan, UK, and Germany, and will roll out to all users once it’s officially released.

Join a Discord voice chat on your PS5 console – PlayStation 5 owners will now be able to join Discord voice chats from their consoles using the Discord app on mobile devices or computers to link their accounts.

How to Link Your PlayStation Network Account to Discord

Kindly note that Discord voice chat on PS5 is only available for those enrolled in the PS5 System Software Beta Program.

• After you installed the PS5 beta software, grab your DualSense controller and go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Linked Services. Here, you’ll find a new option to link your Discord account.
• Now, the process of linking your account for PlayStation Network to your Discord account will begin.
• Now, you will get two options to link your account: Either use the QR code shown to sign in using your phone’s camera app, or select “Use Browser” on the PS5 to sign in using the console’s internet browser. It is recommended that you use the QR Code scanner as it’s super-quick to use!
• That’s it, now, you can voice chat with your Discord friends on your PS5, no matter what platform they’re on.

Variable Refresh Rate support for 1440p – You can now enjoy smoother visual performance when using a VRR-compatible HDMI 2.1 display at 1440p resolution. There is also some updates made to the parameters of the PS5 console’s 1440p output test, to bring 1440p support for a wider range of HDMI displays.

• To check if your HDMI device is compatible, go to [Settings] > [Screen and Video] > [Video Output] > [Test 1440p Output].

Connect your Discord and PlayStation Network accounts – Once you’ve linked your accounts, select the Discord app on your PS5 to start a voice chat with your friends in your preferred Discord channel.

Use the new “Join Game” icon in party chats – When a party member is playing a game that you can join, a join icon will be displayed on the voice chat card. This is great for getting into a quick multiplayer session with your friends, even if they’re not in the same room as you.

Sort your game library & filter games – You can now sort your games into lists and filters to find your favorite titles quickly. This feature is especially handy for finding PSVR games – and those that will be coming to PS VR2 later this month – as well as those you’ve already played on other consoles.

Manually Upload Game Captures – You can now manually select and upload game clips from your console to the PlayStation App for easy sharing on social media or with friends. This complements the current automatic upload feature in the PS App, and will make it easier to share your gameplay experiences with your loved ones across all your platforms.

Improve the screen reader – When you’re using the screen reader, it will now give you more detailed guidance when navigating your console. This includes showing you which direction you can move from one select component to the next, and when reading web pages, it’ll show borders around your view area.

Wireless Device Update for DualSense controller – The PS5 can now be updated with the DualSense pad’s firmware through a wireless connection. This is a nice improvement for the DualSense pad, and it should help people with disabilities enjoy their PS5 more fully.

Voice command for game capture – Players can now save gameplay video clips with voice commands. This is particularly useful for people who are visually impaired and can’t use a mouse to interact with their consoles.

More ease of use features – PlayStation 5 now lets you transfer saved data, user profiles, settings, and screenshots from your PS5 to another console using a local Wi-Fi network or a LAN cable. This is a good way to keep your important data safe, and you can also download games, content, and videos directly to a second console when they become available.
